How to quickly create a multiple choice quiz in MS Forms using ChatGPT

How to quickly create a multiple choice quiz in MS Forms using ChatGPT

There has been much written recently about artificial intelligence (AI) and how it can support teaching and learning. So, I thought it was time to add my contribution to the discussion.

In this blog I’m going to explain how you can save time by quickly creating a multiple choice quiz using ChatGPT and import it into Microsoft Forms.

I’m going to start with an assumption that you already know how to access ChatGPT and that you have created an account and that you are familiar with using it.

The first thing we’re going to do is ask ChatGPT to create a multiple choice quiz for us with four possible answers and to identify the correct response for each question, as in the screenshot below:

It is important not to rely 100% on what ChatGPT produces…..

………. especially its first response.

You need to read through what it has produced and if the content is not accurate or it’s not what you require, you can ask it to regenerate the answer or type a more specific prompt so that it generates the response that you want. This is what I had to do in the above example and I actually discarded two of its questions because they were not relevant.

Once you are happy with the content that chat GPT has produced for your specific requirements, here is the next step.

Copy the entire quiz from ChatGPT making sure that you have picked up the numbers of each question and paste the quiz into Notepad. (Notepad is a free application which has probably been pre-installed on your computer).

The reason for pasting it into Notepad is so that we get rid of the grey background and we have a tidy configuration of the quiz. We can also add the numbers to the questions if they have not been picked up when you first copied the quiz from ChatGPT.

We want to get rid of this messy configuration ……

And have the quiz looking like this………

Now we are ready to copy it as a Word document.

To do this select (Ctrl + A) the entire quiz in Notepad, copy it (Ctrl + C) and paste it (Ctrl + V) into a new Word Document, give it a title such as Cardiovascular System Multiple Choice Quiz and save the document where that you will be able to easily find it. Close the Word document.

We are now ready to import this multiple choice quiz into Microsoft Forms.

To do this, follow these instructions:

  • Log into your account, if you already have one and you will see a home page displaying your existing Forms and Quizzes (if you have any) and these icons
  • Click on Quick import and you’ll see this pop up window
  • Click on Upload from this device. (Note that your file size cannot be bigger than 10MB).
  • Find and select the multiple choice document you just saved and then click the Open button.
  • Click the Import my file as Quiz box and watch Microsoft Forms weave its magic!
  • You will see a pop up window like this
  • And when it has completed the conversion, you’ll see a pop up window like this
  • Next, click Start review to check and edit the quiz.

We now need to spend some time tidying up each of the questions in Microsoft Forms.

We’re going to identify which of the responses is the correct response by putting a tick next to the response and we are going to allocate one point to each question.

I also like to toggle the Required button so that students have to answer each question and I click on the three button ellipsis on the bottom right hand corner of the question window to shuffle each of the options

We need to do the same editing for each of the questions making sure that the correct answer (as indicated by CHatGPT) has been removed from the last field (as in the image below).

Lastly we just need to check that everything looks fine and all the responses are correct.

We do this by clicking the preview button in the top right hand corner to see what it looks like as if we were a student.

When we are satisfied that everything is OK we can now send this form to our students by clicking the collect responses button in the top right hand corner.
